This paper presents an overview of the synthetic audio tools in MPEG-4, which is a standard for interactive multimedia applications. These tools include specifications for sound coding based on structured, parametric descriptions of algorithmic synthesis methods and wavetable synthesis; generation of synthetic speech from textual data; and tools for composition, postprocessing, and 3-D spatialization of various audio streams at the MPEG-4 terminal.:
