The RIAA Engineering Committee

The Engineering Committee of the Record Industry Association of America was established to act upon engineering matters for the Association and prepare industry standards for phonograph records. Standards for pre-recorded magnetic tapes were included later as the need arose. Currently there are four standards in existance; three for disc phonograph records, and one for pre-recorded magnetic tapes. The record standards specify response characteristic, record dimensions and speeds, and requirements for the stereophonic record. The magnetic tape standard is an all inclusive bulletin specifying the response characteristics for operating speeds of 7-1/2 and 3-3/4 ips., and track widths and placement for two, four, and eight track recordings on tape 1/4 in. wide for reel to reel and endless loop cartridge operation. This standard is being revised to include four track recordings on tape 0.150 in. wide at an operating speed of 1-7/8 ips.
