This paper examines and compares the tandem coding properties of Wavelet Packet based audio codecs with MPEG-1 codecs. The WP codec follows the overall structure of the generic MPEG codec and differs only in the time-frequency mapping used. Experiments have been carried out on a range of standard test signals and preliminary results show that the WP codec is considerably more tolerant to tandeming. Up to 10 stages of tandeming have been examined over a range of bit rates.
