Relevance of Measurements on Audio Codecs

Document Thumbnail

Subjective quality assessment is the preferred method for evaluating audio compression algorithms. However, users still need to measure audio characteristics and performance of codecs in order to compare and qualify equipment. This paper reviews various types of measurements, discusses their relevance, especially for nonspecialists in compression technology, and describes typical traps to avoid when measuring systems involving audio compression.
