There is an increasing interest in improved control of sound, both in recording and generation. Since sound is a wavefield phenomenon, control requires arrays of microphones (recording) and arrays of loudspeakers (generation) in order to utilize the spatial properties of the individual wavefronts. In sound recording, microphone arrays yield wavefield images that enable recognition of the contribution of the individual sound sources and allow very powerful multichannel characterization methods. In sound generation, loudspeaker arrays emit wavefields with temporal and spatial properties that are optimized for the acoustic function and the acoustic space involved.
