A new satellite based digital broadcasting system will employ perceptual audio coding at various data rates and quality levels. For the time being, the only means to test the sound quality of a perceptual coder is by comparison with a reference in a listening test. To overcome these expensive listening tests, objective perceptual measurement tools have been developed, and international standardization work is currently under progress. This report describes how perceptual measurement can be used to reduce the need for subjective verification. Further benefit of the derived method is the repeatability of the objective results for the purpose of a codec acceptance procedure, as well as for the network setup process, and for field tests.
