This paper examines practical issues related to the implementation of digital audio devices for the IEEE 1394 serial bus. It provides a brief tutorial of the IEEE 1394-1995 standard, the P1394a and P1394b supplemental standards, hardware development guidelines, and an overview of protocols for transporting and controlling audio over the 1394 bus. A detailed block diagram of a typical IEEE 1394 audio device is presented with strategies for implementing its functional blocks.
