Nearfield monitoring is an opportunity to overcome bad room acoustical conditions, both for studios and control rooms. Many control rooms have changed their appearance simply because of fashion trends. Instead, important parameters should be considered. These parameters include the impulse response of monitoring speakers radiating very short sound pressure fronts and the impulse response of the control room itself, taking care to avoid early sound reflections following the V-Criterium. Speech and sound from musical instruments show distinct sound properties during the first 10-15 ms which must be recorded, transmitted, and reproduced in the necessary way, with very fast recognition of time differences, as far as the human listening ability is concerned. The V-Criterium describes the consequences for the control room acoustics.
