A new method of generating diffusers is presented based on a combination of orthogonal modulated and fractal gratings. The diffusing structures not only have improved diffusion characteristics but also extend the frequency range for a given diffuser size. The theory, design, advantages, and limitations of these structures will be discussed and simulation results of their performance will be presented.
