This paper presents a fundamental analysis of the linearity and efficiency for a suite of switching power stage topologies, from a simple two-level switching leg to more complex N-level switching topologies synthesizing PSCPWM. The investigations clarify the inherent limitations in terms of distortion mechanisms in switching power output stages. Generalized analytical expressions for power stage dissipation are derived and the efficiencies of the switching output stages are compared.
