Signal Characteristics of Matrix and Discrete Multichannel Recordings

Digital surround soundtracks (primarily for movies) are currently available on various consumer media as either matrix encoded or discrete multichannel recordings. The availability of digital distribution media has increased the available dynamic range, and discrete multichannel sound has made possible increased freedom to use extended bandwidth and to utilize discrete sound effects in surround channels. This study compares the differences between soundtracks and musical recordings, and between discrete and matrix versions of the same soundtracks.
