From the very first realization by Léon Scott de Martinville in 1857 that sound could be displayed in two-dimensional form on a time axis, scientists started recording for scientific purposes, frequently deviating from the formats available commercially. They had good reasons for this, because scientific recording did not need the compromises necessary for commercial utilization. The paper provides an overview and contemporary considerations of the formats chosen.
