In this paper, the state of the art in presentation of sound in three-dimensional audiovisual scene description languages is overviewed. As examples, two multimedia standards are discussed that address parametric coding and real-time presentation of audiovisual scenes, namely, the MPEG-4 and VRML. The underlying theory and methods for parametric description of 3-D sound and virtual acoustics are dealt with.
