A new method of noise reduction which exploits some features of the auditory system is proposed. The noise suppression is obtained twofold: by rising masking thresholds or by keeping noisy components beneath these thresholds. The foundations of the method and some engineered algorithms are described. The way of introduction of the noise reduction features into an MPEG encoder is demonstrated.
