This paper presents a new approach of a signal-adaptive wavelet filterbank. The system makes use of a wavelet-packet transform, offering a completely flexible time-frequency tiling. Boundary effects can be avoided by using overlapping blocks of samples and therefore switching bases is possible at every tree-level without affecting other subbands. The filterbank can be switched based on either perceptual or rate-distortion criteria. The paper motivates the relation between compression and non-linear approximation theory and highlights the advantages of Wavelet-based compression schemes.
