In recent years, various approaches have been used to build digital signal processing (DSP) boards for audio processing in general and for digital audio workstations (DAW) in particular. This paper analyzes existing architectures ad shows how two DSP boards or DAWs with essentially the same components can be totally different in performance. Requirements of an 'ideal' architecture are presented.
