An alternative form of two dimensional diffusion structure based on absorption reflection gratings is presented. The theory, design, advantages, and limitations of these structures are discussed, and simulation and measurements of their performance are presented. Methods of extending and improving performance are suggested. The paper shows that diffusing structures which take up less space than phase reflecting ones are possible.
