There is increasing interest in partially absorbing surface treatments that also diffuse reflected energy. This can be achieved by using a complex array of reflective and absorbent patches. This paper discusses optimization strategies to enable the pattern of absorptive and reflective patches to be designed to achieve a specified absorption value. It also shows how the use of non-flat surfaces can improve the diffusing properties significantly.
