Using the well-known ISO/IEC 11172-3 (ISO/MPEG-Audio) Standard, an increase in perceived signal quality can be achieved in a fully compatible way by improving the encoder. Advanced second-generation encoder technology is described with respect to Layer III of the ISO/MPEG-Audio coder concerning its perceptual model, coding kernel, and joint stereo coding algorithm. In addition, an MPEG-2 (ISO DIS 13818-3) compliant Layer III is presented. It offers good (commentary-grade) quality at a reduced audio bandwidth and bit rates down to 64 kbits/s per stereo signal.
