Genetic algorithms (GAs) are adaptive methods that may be used to solve search and optimization problems and are based on the genetic process of biological organisms. They are ideally suited to adaptive filters that employ nonlinear models, such as a psychoacoustic model. This paper discusses the fundamental principles of GAs and their implementation and describes an application where they are used in an adaptive audio filtering system.
