At the AES 96th Convention, the authors presented a paper on the first 4-channel headphone for spatial auditory events (-Four-Channel Headphone for In-Front Localization and HDTV or Dolby Surround Use,- Preprint 3826). This headphone principle enables one to listen to multichannel recordings with perception equivalent to listening to loudspeakers. Measurements are presented which correlate with optimized real auditory events and psychoacoustic effects. Essential features of this headphone system are 3-D reproduction of sound, reduced hearing sound-pressure level, and different binaural loudness sensation to ordinary headphone systems.
