The basic technology of AC-2 and AC-3 algorithms is discussed with an emphasis on the practical application. AC-2 and AC-3 are both data rate reduction coding systems allowing the transmission of high-quality audio signals at data rate compression factors of up to 14:1 or more. The growth of the use of this technology into professional link applications, digital cinema, digital cable, and high-definition television is discussed.
