The voltage-controlled amplifier, as used in compressors, expanders and peak limiters, is an important component in the recording chain. The recording engineer usually knows what results can or should be obtained from compressors. Valve-type compressors have always been in use and are becoming more desirable. The beam control amplifier, as described and used in the beam compressor, overcomes some of the shortcomings associated with compressors, whether they are valve, solid-state, or digitally derived types.:
