A clean output from a square wave input is not necessarily a good criterion for the performance of a feedback audio amplifier, in spite of widely held views to the contrary. In an amplifier with a high degree of feedback, it can necessitate unnecessary compromises in open-loop gain, and hence distortion reduction at the higher audio frequencies. The reasons are described, together with a more rational approach to design and testing.:
