This paper describes how adaptive differential pulse code modulation (ADPCM) can be used in subband coding schemes to significantly improve the coding efficiency with typical music materials. The basic method is introduced and a coding scheme that includes such an ADPCM module, based on MPEG Layer II, is outlined. Results of a simulation are shown that demonstrate, in terms of the signal-to-noise ratio, the gain achievable in the presence of some critical musical items by using the ADPCM compared to the standard Layer II system.
