5.1-channel digital audio will soon reach the home via digital video disc (DVD). As we move from 2 to 5.1 channels, audio in multiple playback formats will reflect clearer frontal imaging and more realistic ambience. There will be concerns of compatibility with existing consumer formats and loudspeaker arrays, as well as opportunities with alternate playback technologies.
