A backward-adaptive linear N-channel predictor for high-quality subband or transform audio coding techniques is presented. The predictor performance is demonstrated by extending Layer 2 as well as Layer 3 of ISO MPEG audio coding. At a bit rate of 2 x 64 kbit/s, the subjective quality of the most critical test sequences is improved up to 3.0 points for Layer 2 and up to 2 points for Layer 3 of the ITU-R 5 Grade Impairment Scale.
