Subband filtering is one of the compute-intensive operations in the MPEG audio coding standard. By using the periodicity of the cosine and the symmetric property of the window, the subband filtering equation can be rearranged to a 32-point DCT-II or DCT-III. That is to say, window operation is followed by a 32-point fast DCT and is computed efficiently by taking advantage of the modified window coefficients. So, in MPEG subband filtering by the authors' fast algorithm, 2560 multiplications in the MPEG subband filtering can be reduced to only 464 multiplications.
