A look-up table has been effectively used in digital audio compression. The method considers two important time-domain parameters, scale factor and mean power of the subband samples, having a close relation to the SMR in the psychoacoustic models. Incorporating LUT in the compression process radically reduces the total encoding time and complexity by about 40% compared with the psychoacoustic model. This enables the real-time software-only implementation of MPEG audio encoding in various environments. The performance of the proposed method shows better results in most of the test materials.
