The modern hearing aid is an advanced miniature sound processor which can be programmed to meet the needs of most hearing-impaired individuals. Based on highly specialized transducers and electronic solutions, remarkable performance can be achieved in spite of challenging conditions with regard to size, supply voltage, and power consumption. The paper provides insight into the signal processing capabilities as well as the acoustical, electronic, and mechanical properties of modem hearing aids in the perspective of different types of hearing impairment.
