A MIDI database consisting of J. S. Bach's Das Wohltemperiere Klavier fugue themes was constructed. Each class of the database contains a reference pattern and its modified forms. A detailed description of the database is presented. Various methods for musical phrase analysis were reviewed, and some of them are applied to this work. An AI-based model of a system for the recognition of themes, by J. S. Bach, was designed and tested. Conclusions are derived and discussed.
