The Role of International Masking and Perceptual Streaming in the Measurement of Music Codec Quality

Document Thumbnail

In measuring the quality of music codecs masking is not the only attribute of the auditory system that has to be modeled. Sometimes distortions that are not masked are difficult to detect, while in other contexts they may be heard easily. Two phenomena play an important role in this problem: informational masking and perceptual streaming. It is shown that when these aspects are quantified, the correlation between subjectively perceived audio quality and objective measurement increases significantly.
