The performance of a high-quality audio coder may be evaluated as a function of the coding quality, bit rate, coding delay, and algorithmic complexity. An optimum coder would maximize the first parameter and minimize the remaining three. With this goal in mind, an optimized audio spectral coder (ASC) has been developed, at INESC, using a specially designed interactive simulation and evaluation environment.
