It is argued that the performance of current 20-bit ADCs is frequently limited by external circuitry. A review of the main problem areas leads to an analysis of a commercial design in which particular emphasis is placed on a new approach to the design of the analog inputs and to improved reference decoupling. Experience has shown that this yields considerable improvements.
