The paper begins by listing the common bit-rate reduction algorithms in current consumer use and explains the meaning of some of the many acronyms. It then looks at some worldwide applications, in particular in video broadcasting (via cable, terrestrial, and satellite), audio broadcasting, and audio delivery systems. Cumulative graphs of units in the field are presented for some of the major consumer applications, such as satellite television and MiniDisc. Some thoughts on the new Digital Video Disc are presented, as well as on multichannel consumer digital audio. Finally, the paper considers some new applications such as on the Internet, video games, and multimedia.
