Polar Radiation Characteristics of Harmonic Distortion in Loudspeakers

Document Thumbnail

The polar radiation characteristics of loudspeakers has been studied extensively throughout the years, both in theoretical terms and through measured data. So far, these analyses have only dealt with the polar characteristics of the fundamental of the loudspeaker, none have dealt with the polar characteristics of the various distortions produced by loudspeakers. Conversely, harmonic distortion measurements are generally measured only on the principle axis of the loudspeaker. Of fundamental importance is the recognition that a loudspeaker's distortion products may have polar characteristics different than that of the fundamental. This paper is a first look at these polar characteristics, and the focus is primarily on harmonically related distortions in cone-type loudspeakers.
