Beyond Bandwidth: Sound Design in Interactive Systems for Multimedia and the Net

This paper reconceives the work of the sound designer and audio engineer in interactive multimedia and on the Net, requiring professional quality and creativity within the constraints of bandwidth and data storage. Techniques familiar to audio professionals are reapplied in contexts important in interactive design, such as understanding object behavior through auditory display or interpreting environmental conditions through sound. Some future directions in sound for multimedia are : considered.
