Multi-Channel High-Definition Digital Audio Systems for High-Density Compact Disk

Document Thumbnail

Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) offers approximately an eightfold increase in data capacity, which enables a wide range of applications to be conceived. A number of coding schemes for multichannel digital audio are reviewed which use multilevel pcm with varying degrees of noise shaping where the balance between channel bandwidth and dynamic range is investigated. It is proposed that the disc format should be flexible and offer compatibility between a number of replay system configurations. Intrinsic to the scheme is the use of lossless compression as a means of maximizing performance but without compromise. These issues, with an emphasis toward signal processing, converter performance and future 3-D sound applications, are discussed.
