In multimedia applications spatializing sounds so that they are perceived as emanating from particular positions in space increase perceptual realism and immersion. A continuous, functional representation of head-related-transfer function (HRTF) measurements, suitable for spatializing speech in teleconferencing services, has been developed using surface spherical harmonics. Perceptual tests then assess the impact of speech spatialization on the perceived audio quality of an example application.
