This paper discusses multichannel wave field analysis as a specification tool for wave field synthesis. Recording of impulse responses along a microphone array gives insight into the spatial structure of a wave field. After applying a radon transform to such a data set, the wave field can be decomposed into its plane wave components. From the distribution of these components over the different directions in space, new measures can be derived for the spatial properties (lateral energy contents, degree of diffusiveness, etc.) of sound fields in enclosures. These measures can be used to accurately characterize complex sound fields and to specify the requirements for multichannel sound systems.
