Analysis and Design of a Blind Statistical SNR Estimator

Many algorithms used in communication systems require knowledge about the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the receiver. SNR estimation methods can be divided in decision-aided and blind approaches. This contribution analyzes a blind statistical approach using higher order moments. Computation of probability distributions of all relevant variables within this estimator allow precise statements about bias and variance of the estimation. The results were used for the design of a programmable device performing SNR measurements at a sampling rate of about 50 Msamples/s.
