A single-chip wavetable synthesizer that includes a one-chip sample ROM, MIDI message processing, and effects processing is presented. High-quality synthesizers use 1-4 Mbytes of external ROM, but by utilizing custom DSP compression techniques tailored to each instrument only 256 kbytes is required, while preserving sound quality. The compression techniques and multiple processors required to decompress the samples in real time are described.
