Many interfaces adopted for professional digital audio, used since the inception of AES3, were developed to transfer generic data in business computing environments. The initial design of these network architectures ignored many issues vitally important to audio. There are ways to solve these problems, but they can be expensive and work arounds can negate the advantage of using commodity parts. This paper discusses the advantages of addressing important issues from the very beginning to reduce cost and increase performance. A comprehensive proposal for a new multichannel digital audio, control, and synchronization interface is presented.
