A new concept for understanding stereo sound and image in 2 to 5+1 multichannel format is presented, which is designed for talk shows, music, sports, and drama applications. This approach, geared toward home theater conditions of listening, is quite different from public theater, which enables a method of production and postproduction specific to television broadcasting to be envisioned. The purpose of the reearch is to improve the coherence of acoustical and visual image by using the advantages of stereophonic perception. According to several film directors and sound engineers, this approach, based upon the complementary aspects of the sound and visual images, does indeed modify our conception of production and improve audio-visual perception.
