This paper discusses the role of rear loudspeakers in the perception of spatial impression based on the results of various experiments on concert hall acoustics. The discussion concludes that rear loudspeakers are not always necessary for the perception of auditory source width, but are necessary for the perception of listener envelopment and suggests a necessary condition for the perception of this listener envelopment.
