A new recording method for audio signals, employing 1-bit oversampling sigma-delta modulation (bit-stream or DSD) has recently been proposed. To reduce the required storage capacity, a lossless coding scheme as described in [1] can be applied. This scheme results in a lossless coding gain, which varies on a frame basis, thus implying a variable bit rate. In some applications, it is important to have a constant bit rate and consequently buffering is required. In this paper, methods are presented for doing this. Furthermore, alternative lossless coding schemes employing adaptive or linear prediction and 'arithmetic coding' are presented. It is demonstrated that at the expense of coder complexity, the coding gain can be drastically improved.
