A novel scheme for the production of stereo and multichannel sound is introduced, which can be incorporated into digital mixing consoles. It is applied to the standardized 3/2 surround loudspeaker format. The main features are cost-efficiency of the implementation, built-in echo simulation, and frequency dependent, user selectable panning characteristics. The correct imaging of individual sound sources with respect to their size and direction was the major design goal. First comparative listening tests have been conducted.
