Conventional surround sound techniques falsify reality to create a dramatic effect deemed appropriate to the visual media they support, but they are inimical to the sensibilities of concertgoers and others who seek involvement in a real event. Symmetry of means is the key. A double mid-side technique applied to a modified sphere microphone is described which meets the criteria for natural sound reproduction.
