On December 12, 1962, WHOO FM began daily broadcasts in the newly-approved compatible multiplex stereo. At that time, there were few stations in the United States operating FM Stereo and, consequently, there was little information available to guide the engineer responsible for installation and proof of the stereo transmitting equipment. In the following brief summary, we will describe the installation, equipment and methods employed in making the proof-of-performance measurements for the Federal Communications Commission, and the major problems encountered in the initial stages of stereo broadcasting.
