Transparent Coding of a Monophonic Audio Signal at 100 Kb/s

Document Thumbnail

This paper describes a variable rate coder which has been designed as a test bed for a noise shaping strategy. At the AES 90th Convention we presented an early version of this strategy. This strategy yields a safe transparent coder (with transparency well controlled) at an average bit rate of 100 Kb/s, on Compact Disc-quality audio signals. The coder is very simple, in particular it takes no advantage of the statistical properties of the signal to achieve larger data compression. It would be easy, however, to apply the proposed noise shaping strategy to more complex coders, taking advantage of linear prediction or vector quantization for instance.
